2025 BOMA International Carbon Reduction Challenge Results Are Announced

The commercial real estate industry continues to demonstrate its commitment to reducing building emissions, according to the latest results of the BOMA International Carbon Reduction Challenge.

“Buildings representing 29.7 million square feet across 14 different states are participating in the Challenge, and the results show that the industry remains dedicated to making progress,” according to a press release. “From 2023 to 2024, participating buildings recorded a year-over-year reduction in emissions, emissions intensity, and total energy consumption. This year’s key takeaway: Challenge participants in the U.S. reduced their total emissions by 7.04%.”

While a report done by the Rhodium Group that posits that up to 4% of emissions reductions from 2023-2024 may be at least partially due to a relatively mild winter and declining generation from coal power plants, reductions remain strong nonetheless.

“BOMA International is dedicated to equipping the global built environment with the essential tools needed to implement carbon reduction strategies that enhance building performance, create pathways to demonstrate building emission reductions, and ensure economic viability,” the release added. “This initiative consists of two components: (1) a benchmarking challenge that employs ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager®, and (2) an online decarbonization resource library that catalogs best practices from around the world.”

“This program is intended to empower building owners and operators to explore and implement carbon reduction strategies that best suit their specific needs and circumstances,” BOMA International President and COO Mary Lue Peck said. “We aim to support and emphasize the commercial real estate sector’s voluntary initiatives to cut carbon emissions.”

Registration remains open for new participants. Visit www.boma.org/carbon to sign up. The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International, founded in 1907, is a federation of U.S. local associations and global affiliates.
